How we make your coin ring

Overview

Creating a handcrafted coin ring is a meticulous process that blends traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Each ring starts as a carefully selected coin and is transformed into a unique piece of jewelry through a series of precise steps. From punching the initial hole to shaping, stretching, and finishing, every stage is crucial in preserving the details and ensuring a high-quality final product. Here’s an inside look at how we make your coin ring.

Step 1: Punching a Hole in the Coin

The first step in the process is to create an opening in the center of the coin. This is done using a punch press, which ensures a clean and precise hole. The size of the hole depends on the final ring size and the type of coin being used. This step, although simple, is one of the most important parts as it is critical in setting the  the foundation for shaping the ring while preserving the coin’s original design elements on the outer band.

Step 2: Folding the Coin in a Die

Once the hole is punched, the coin is placed into a specialized die that allows it to be gradually folded into a ring shape. Using manual force, the metal is carefully shaped outward while keeping the details intact. This step starts to reveal the transformation of the coin into a wearable ring.

Step 3: Annealing

Throughout the shaping process, the coin is annealed, or heated, to soften the metal and prevent cracking. This is a crucial step, especially for silver coins, as it reduces the risk of stress fractures and allows for smoother manipulation. Repeated annealing ensures that the ring remains durable and workable as it undergoes further refinement.

Step 4: Stretching the ring

After the initial folding, the ring is placed on a ring stretcher to refine its shape and bring it closer to the desired size. This process helps smooth out any irregularities and ensures an even, comfortable fit. The ring is gradually expanded to achieve the correct dimensions, with careful attention paid to maintaining its integrity and structure.

Step 5: Sizing the Ring

Once the ring has been stretched and shaped, it is carefully resized to the customer’s requested size. This is done by using a reduction die and sanding the edges to ensure a precise fit. The inside of the ring is also smoothed and polished for comfort while maintaining the original details of the coin.

Step 6: Finishing Touches – Antiquing or Polishing

The final step is to enhance the ring’s appearance based on the desired finish. There are two main finishing options:

  • Antiquing: A chemical process is used to darken the recessed areas of the design, creating a vintage, contrasted look that highlights the coin’s details.

  • Polishing: The ring is meticulously buffed to a high shine, bringing out the natural luster of the metal for a sleek and elegant appearance.

  • Most of our rings are are sold with an antique finish as it highlights the original details of the coin and makes the final ring “pop” more.

A Work of Art, Ready to Wear

After the finishing touches are applied, the ring undergoes a final inspection to ensure quality and craftsmanship. Every coin ring we create is a unique piece of history, transformed into a meaningful and wearable work of art. Whether antiqued or polished, your handcrafted coin ring is built to last and ready to tell its story for years to come.
